Pop = bone loss, flame retardant chemicals, hormone interference. Really?

The Today Health website has an interesting post about 5 reasons that you shouldn't drink a lot of pop, or soda if you're from farther north. Some of the reasons are chemicals that interfere with hormones in your body, accelerated bone loss, chemicals that have flame retardant properties, and some potential (in lab animals) cancer causing chemicals.

Read the article and let me know what you think and whether these risks are the result of people finding fault in minor matters or whether you think pop is a health risk. What studies could be done to find answers more conclusively?

  1. I think cancer-causing research is at a loss. Apparently EVERYTHING causes cancer so when a new study comes out with supposed "revolutionarly shocking results" about cancer I have conditioned myself to turn a blind eye. But as far as the other causes like hormone interference and accelerated bone loss don't surprise me much. I'm still gonna have a coke every now and then though. Only one question: Why would flame retardant be a bad thing to incorporate into your system? That would seem like a good thing, especially on the cellular level, it'd mean more difficult to burn your skin cells right?

  2. I have honestly thought pop was a health risk for a long time now, and that is why I have refrained from drinking it. I am not surprised at all at any of the chemicals they have found in it and I had a feeling cancer would come out of pop. Cancer could come from anything these days, I believe. I am not certain how scientists can do anything else with the test in pop, more than they already have.. but seeing humans have invented the internet, I am sure it is possible :)

  3. Like Anna, I too have always known that too much pop is bad for your health. Like the article says, it causes osteoporosis, heart and kidney problems, and muscle loss. Now I think that having pop on certain occasions isn't a bad thing, but having a pop every day would definetly cause at least one of the three issues. In the lab with the rats, the rats who had the phosphate died weeks sooner than the rats who didn't have the phosphate. If they took the high phosphoric acid out of the pop, then I think having a pop a day wouldn't be as bad of a thing. The part where they talk about the whole cancer issue is where I just pretty much ignore it. No one really can know for sure what causes cancer and I am sick of everyone saying "Oh this causes cancer" because you can't really prove it. I used to drink mountain dew every day, but when I found out that it was extremely unhealthy for you and you could eventually die from drinking it all the time, I stopped. They say it also causes cavities, and I haven't had one yet so I would like to keep it that way. People think that since pop is "diet" that it automatically takes the bad out of pop, but it doesn't. Acesulfame K, sucralose, and saccharin pollute the water, which makes me kind of sick because I love water and I would like to keep my water clean. Hopefully people start to realize how dangerous pop really is, and maybe won't drink it as often as some do.
