California has banned tanning booths for minors. What is your opinion about this scientifically and personally. The scientific aspect of this should focus on the aspect of increased skin cancer rates and amount of vitamin D.
UPDATE: These two links (Tanning Truth & Tanning Info Center) both identify that there are clearly benefits to tanning, especially in a controlled method such as indoor tanning booths. Look at these and identify any flaws in their thinking and possibly any flaws in the idea of banning tanning booths for minors.
It is a good thing someone finally did something about the use of tanning beds. I think it is an especially good thing for the state of California to pass since they are in an area of the country were the sun is strong anyway. If minors continued to use both i'm sure the rise of skin cancer would increase more than we could imagine.

I think it is a good thing that California is banning tanning booths for minors. Most minors don't know the risk of tanning booths. Plus the rays they are getting from the strong sun in California, skin cancer would be very prone there.

I think that California did the right thing to band tanning booths to minors. Tanning at a young age in a tanning bed increases the risks of getting skin cancer faster. It's just as bad for adults too.
ReplyDeleteI think California made a good choice. I feel tanning beds should be banned in all states. People who use tanning beds are taking a risk of getting skin cancer. Most people who use tanning beds use a tan accelerator lotion instead of sunscreen lotion. Sunscreen helps to protect peoples skin against ultra violet rays.
ReplyDeleteI think California made in amazing choice with banning minors from using tanning booths I personaly think tanning booths should not be allowed to be used for adults either being that exsposed to ultra violet rays can cause major issues with skin cancer just walking around under the sun is be enough. why chance you risk of getting skin cancer when you already have a high enough risk of getting it

I think it is a good idea for California to band tanning booths for minors because it is one of the number one causes of skin cancer. Skin cancer is sure to drop down in rates now. Also people in California really don't need to tan because it is already so sunny there. Without tanning beds there is less energy use to which is good for the envirenment. So using less of them is better. Now minors can tan in the sun which still isnt the best but they will be getting vitemin D doing so which they do need. The only bad thing about banning tanning beds for minors is that the companies will not get as much money as they did before.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, every state should ban minors from using tanning beds. Minors do not have enough knowledge to make a big decision such as this. They can't fully understand the harm of ultraviolet rays. As the article says skin cancer is the leading cause of death among young women in their twenties. With this issue, I'm glad California stepped in and tried to change this by not allowing people under 18 to use tanning beds. Anyone who uses a tanning bed is at risk of skin cancer. Is the benefit worth the harm? Minors are not able to see how just stepping into a tanning bed could possibly be the end of their life if they received any form of skin cancer.
ReplyDeleteIndoor tanning is not a good habit for anyone, especially minors to be attracted to. Scientifically Melanoma skin cancer is the most common of all three types of skin cancers. Melanoma is responsible for about 8,000 cancer fatalities annually. Even though tanning is a bad habit which can result in cancer, you have to be exposed to the sun to gain vitamin D. Tanning increases the amount of vitamin D in your body which is a huge benefit. Vitamin D is also important for the prevention of many types of cancer, and is vital for you bodily functions. In my opinion you don't have to be tan so why worry about having the risk of getting skin cancer or not. I am glad that California banned minors from using tanning beds. By signing this bill the people of California will improve their overall health. But by not allowing minors to go tanning when and where they wish, this may result in minors still tanning too much outdoors. By tanning indoors you can control the amount of UV rays you are exposed to and for how long. Unlike when you go outdoor tanning. Also by not allowing minors from tanning indoors the facilities where they would go tanning, would lose business which may result in other problems. There are some pros and many cons to tanning. Yes, being tan is a great thing, but I wouldn't risk my health and even life for being tan.

I think that California made the correct choice in banning tanning from minors. If a minor really wanted to be tan bad enough they would find resources other than tanning booths (such as lotions that gradually tan our skin or actual sunlight). By using natural sunlight, our skin is exposed to vitamin D which is a "better" form of getting the tan complection. By elimanting minors from using tanning beds it will lower the rate of skin cancer and allow people's skin to be more natural.
ReplyDeleteI am notorious for using a tanning bed, but i believe California made the right decision. I believe just like anything else, you should be 18 to be able to make the desion to tan. i would say that minors dont fully understand what they are doing to themselves, but really, who does? if everyone knew exactly what was going on, that the ultravioulet rays were terrible for us, no one would do it.Everyone knows that tanning can cause skin cancer, yet we still do it. Nobody really has a good feel for what it does. By taking minors out of the equation, we could really lower the rates of skin cancer.
